1 Big Thing
Professional Trust is Low
A recent Gallup poll indicates that Americans' perceptions of the honesty and ethics of various professions remain historically low, with little change from 2023. Nurses continue to be the most trusted, with 75% of respondents rating their honesty and ethics as high or very high. Grade-school teachers rank second at 61%, followed by military officers, pharmacists, and medical doctors. Conversely, lobbyists, members of Congress, and TV reporters are viewed as the least trustworthy professions, with over half of Americans rating their ethics as low or very low. Notably, trust in medical doctors has declined by 14 percentage points since 2021, reaching its lowest point since the mid-1990s. Similarly, judges and clergy have experienced significant drops in public trust over the past two decades. These trends reflect a broader decline in confidence across various U.S. institutions.
