Executives are often seen as the visionaries and leaders of a company, but what happens when their actions speak louder than their words? Frontline managers are left to deal with the fallout of decisions that could have been avoided, decisions that cost the company money and create unnecessary challenges. A great example of this are the decisions made by Elon Musk and the Tesla board. In the press release announcing the layoffs, Musk says “there is nothing I hate more” in relation to letting people go. When looking at the actions and not the words used by Musk, he is comfortable lying to workers and the press.
Full Disclosure: I am no fan of Elon Musk. I am of the viewpoint that he has many talents that enable him to start companies, but he has zero talent in managing and maintaining companies.
