In 2019, the Business Roundtable upended the business community by changing its statement on corporate purpose. Read this article. It seemed to make the shift from focusing on shareholder value to stakeholder capitalism, giving greater emphasis to employees and the communities. I recall at the time a friend being overjoyed saying “finally, they see what is right”.
Being the horrible skeptic I am, I said my customary “hold your horses”. I loved what the new statement said, but I didn’t see details. What I wanted to see was if and how this new statement would translate into action.
