Compensation is an incredibly complex topic. It not only is complex from a financial standpoint, but it is a personally sensitive topic. Even if you aren’t living paycheck-to-paycheck, most of us work because we must pay mortgages, bills, and save for the future.
Most of us know that inflation is constantly going up (some years more than others) and employees hope that pay goes up as well. In addition, employees like to be rewarded if the company is doing well.
Companies believe that incentives help performance (FYI – this oversimplification is usually wrong in the long term) and design pay programs that way. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes it creates confusion and hard feelings. Amazon has finally hit that point. Based on this article, employees aren’t too happy at this point.
